History of Christ Church Ithan, Villanova, Pennsylvania

Christ Church, Ithan was designed and built by Theophilus Parsons Chandler (1846-1928), a noted architect of his time, and deeded by him and his wife, the former Sophie Madeleine duPont, to the trustees of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania. It was consecrated on All Saint's Day, November 1, 1919.

English gothic in design, the Church is situated on historic Conestoga Road on ground once known as "Ithan Farms," the summer homes of the Chandlers. For thirty-nine years, it was administered as Ithan Chapel with worship services under the pastoral care of St. Martin's Church, Radnor.

A movement was started to gain full parochial autonomy for the chapel, and this effort was successful in June 1958, when the chapel became an independent parish with it's own Rector and Vestry under the name of Christ Church, Ithan.

Other major buildings designed by Mr. Chandler include:

Cathedral of St. John the Divine, NY, NY
